Cyclists Throwing Magnets

I saw an article on Gizmodo about a magnet that a cyclists are supposed to throw on your vehicle if they think you`re a bad driver. The concept is pretty straightforward - the cyclist prints a few of these and attach a magnet strip to each, then throw them at vehicles. Personally, I'm against this idea for numerous reasons.

I'll start by saying that I have no problem with cyclists, but I think there needs to be greater enforcement of traffic rules for them. Helmet laws are rarely enforced, and when is the last time you've seen an officer pull over someone riding a bike on the sidewalk? Since the number of cyclists has increased substantially along with fuel costs and unemployment, there needs to be more strict rules and regulations by police, in my opinion.

Another cyclist without a helmet

Too often, I'll see cyclists taking up a lot of room on the streets, and making it very awkward for drivers to be on the road with them. If someone actually threw one of these on my car, I would be pissed off. They claim it does no damage to the paint, but they are incorrect.  If there is dirt on the back of the magnet, or on the vehicle, the magnet will cause little scratches. I would buy a bunch of cheap bike locks, follow the person who threw this at my car, and lock their bike up when they're not looking.

What would you do?

  4. Cyclists always make me nervous. Especially when mother hen has 10 of her ducklings trailing off behind her all in their training wheels. They just need to learn how to ride within their boundaries, damnit!

  6. I doubt cyclists or drivers would have these issues if there were more bike lanes.

  7. I see tons of bicycle lanes springing up in Sydney, especially in the CBD - they have even closed off many roads to convert them into cycle ways

  8. ^^ yeah it kind of pisses me off, like your supposed to share the road and all, but sometimes they are just as much assholes as the drivers.

  9. Wait, so are they gonna be holding these in one hand, always ready for a car to pass by? It's gonna pass them pretty fast...

  10. cyclists on the road are almost as annoying as slalom skiers in fucking resorts... GTFO MY WAY!

Yet, that magnet stuff made me laugh real bad. I wonder if some people are really doing this!

  11. If you throw a handful of ball bearings out the window at the road they bounce up with the force of a .45

I'm not recommending anyone do this I'm just saying that escalation can be a dangerous game.

  12. I don't have much of a problem where I live, but in the larger cities cyclists have died, so...it is a problem for sure. I don't see this Yellow Card thing becoming all the rage though.

Yeah, powdered tea is horrible. Gotta have the real thing. :)

  13. The cyclists where I live drive safe because they have their own road for them. So I never see people have a problem with them :).

  15. We don't have a lot of cyclists where I live. But I can see where they would piss drivers off in places where they are every where.

  16. I love your idea to lock the person's bike up when they aren't looking. Little bastards think everyone should be especially careful around them, like the road revolves around their safety.
BREAKING NEWS: Riding a bike is DANGEROUS. If you are in a crash, there is nothing to protect you except a helmet. This is a big reason why most people don't commute on a bike.

If you want to commute on your bike, you need to accept the fact that it's a dangerous mode of transportation. You are taking that risk. Everyone else on the road shouldn't need to slow down and be careful around you just because you made a dangerous choice.

  18. totally agree. that awkward feeling you get when you're driving near a cyclist.

  19. I would love throwing magnets at cars.

  20. I feel awkward when I'm on a bus and a cyclist gets too close to the bus, so I'd hate to think how it makes the drivers feel. It works both ways, though, I guess; I've seen plenty of bus drivers getting way too closeto the cycle lane as well.
