If you're going to work on your own car, it would be wise to pick up a repair manual for your vehicle. It essentially gives you a step-by-step description on how to maintain your vehicle, and takes the guess work out of the procedures, and ensures safety. The $30 or so dollars that you'll spend on this book (which is unique to your vehicle) will probably save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in the long run.
Nothing demonstrates my point better than this 30 second video:
If you are working on your vehicle without a repair manual, I highly recommend picking one up - unless you are a skilled/trained mechanic, in which case you are probably convincing people NOT to purchase a repair manual so they will fuck up their car and you'll have to fix it.
If you can't afford a manual, then you can always good it. Lots of good information online and you can find .pdfs of said manuals. I personally like to have the manual because dirty hands and a keyboard do not mix well.
I'd love to fix up my own car, but for some reason I'm deathly afraid of it...I think in this case it's the lack of knowledge...KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. I'll consider it, thanks.
too lazy to watch the video but with the mechanic fail comments I am guessing that would be me. I replaced my rotors/pads/calipers once (and did a good job too) and I decided you know what ... there is a reason mechanics make so much. Them having a lift to work under your car instead of you laying on the concrete floor in a COLD ASS basement is worth that extra money. Just shop around till you find one you trust. Yeah I replaced those brakes in the dead of winter in my parents UN-heated basement. Fingers were blue after several hours of wrenching on this bolt or that nut etc etc. Air filter - sure. Windshield wipers - sure. Oil filter and oil - no thanks. I'll pay Firestone the $25. Hell I can barely buy the oil and filter for that much at Wal-Mart. Then there is the disposal. Let someone else worry about cancer form changing oil. I have enough other concerns. :P
great mechanic lol
