What Happens If You Don't Change Your Oil?

Even people who aren't mechanically-inclined know that only a retard doesn't change his oil. But what actually happens if you neglect to perform regular oil changes on your vehicle? I sent Das Auto`s senior news correspondent, Yuri Bonergarden, to find out the answer to this question.

Yuri was able to contact one unfortunate gentleman who literally ran his BMW 60,000KM without an oil change, and this gentleman shared pictures of his engine with Das Auto.

First, we'll have a look at the oil pan. Nasty! It's amazing the engine could still run!

Next, the car's owner (who shall remain nameless) showed us the backside of the cover.

To get technical, your engine will be filled with sludge. Your engine simply can't run properly with all this crap. The owner of this particular car will be cleaning his engine for a while, and even after rigorous cleaning, it's not certain that it can ever function at optimum efficiency ever again.

Kids, our senior news correspondent, Yuri Bonergarden, says "NO" to improper engine care.

  1. My idiot friend had an Accord that he drove 160,000KM on between oil-changes. I wish I took pictures of that sludge.

  7. I had a friend who worked as an auto tech at a dealership, and one day this chick brought in her car for an oil change. She told him she was so excited that her car even had a warning light to change the oil. My friend said, uh, your car doesn't have that. Turns out it was the low oil light, which was flickering because she had gone about 30,000 miles without a change.

Needless to say, her car was destroyed. And needless to say, she was not so excited anymore about her oil light.

  9. That's horrible, on a lighter note Das Auto! you are my car/vehicle guy and this is probably a stupid question but I bought a 28mm scale Ford Transit yesterday for my zombie/modern gaming, is it called a Transit in America and are they popular over there.

  12. I used to be RELIGIOUS 3500 miles - oil change. Now I follow the computer and ignore the 3 month rule. I think my little g6 pushes 7500 miles.

  16. Many companies try to push the "3000 mile rule" on you, but in reality, this isn't the best policy to follow. Oil has to "break in" from new to become the best lubricant it's able to be. By replacing it too late, obviously the oil has broken down into the sludge you see in the pictures, but by replacing it too soon, you're replacing your engine's lubricant when it's at it's best performance capabilities. I've always stuck to a "4-5000" mile rule, depending on the amount of hard driving I've done on my cars.

Just for the love of GOD, don't let that happen to your car!!

  19. it's not hard to change your oil. i usually manage to stay on track with my oil changes, but i change mine myself. if i had to take it to a shop i wouldn't do it nearly as often as i do.

  20. After reading this, maybe it's time for an oil change lol. That is disgusting though! It's amazing how much crap can build up and it still runs. Good find.

  24. thats bullshit. the older, dirtier and longer oil is in an engine the better it works and the faster your car goes.
